At last, our dear friend (Paul D.Maley), accompanied by his wife (Lynn) from Houston, Texas U.S. reached Arbil in 31/03/2011 with a warm welcoming from Amateur Astronomers Association of Kurdistan.
We called this event (Operation Peraga Occultation Videography - OPOV), the AAAK team was (Azhy Hasan, Rojgar Hamed, Aso Razzaq and Harem Kakil) sure with Paul D.Maley and Lynn, secured by a police patrol team. We went to the observing site, east of Arbil city, in particular 15 kilometers north-south east of (Shaqlawah), the most famous tourist town. In the beginning many problems appeared, start from the telescope's finder which was jammed and then shortcomings in the work of the electrical system of the main telescope (8" MEADE LX200) which is necessary to tracking the telescope automatically by its Go-To system. But the major problem that emerged was a thin layer of Cirrus high clouds only one hour before the occultation, and that was the really big problem, but soon this cloud disappeared, only 40 minutes before the show! At the end, this wonderful path of Cirrus clouds adds an atmosphere of joy and pleasure in all of us. Everything was ready as it was pre-planned, then the attached equipments to the telescope record the disappearance of the 10.5 magnitude star during the passage of asteroid 554 Peraga and occultation its light for 3.4 seconds at 21:49 on Friday, 04/01/2011. "It was a great event and a great victory; really it was one of the most beautiful events that I recorded in the world after I lost all hope because of the Cirrus clouds, which covered the observing area. I couldn't do that without great cooperation from AAAK and the crew of security Operation Peraga Occultation succeeded in Iraqi Kurdistan…And I thank each of (Mr. Nawzad Hadi) governor of Erbil and (Mr. Delawar), the mayor of Shaqlawah for their wonderful support". Said Paul D.Maley. Operation Peraga Occultation Videography was not only a scientific mission, but a carnival brought us together… We, the astronomers in the East and West under the umbrella of cooperation and harmony to achieve the goals of scientific and dissemination of scientific awareness and experience mutual away all of any such thing as discrimination. This is the world of astronomers without any borders.
